Users of ChatGPT experienced a sudden inability to receive responses from the chatbot on Thursday afternoon. Many users encountered an “internal server error” message, indicating that the service was not functioning properly. The disruption began around 1:30 PM ET, which coincided with a surge in reports on Down Detector. OpenAI posted a status update on its website at 2 PM ET, acknowledging the high error rates affecting ChatGPT, its API, and Sora.

As of 6:15 PM ET, OpenAI reported that Sora was fully operational, and APIs were beginning to recover. However, ChatGPT and its APIs were still undergoing comprehensive remediation at that time. Microsoft, as OpenAI’s cloud provider, reported a power issue at one of its datacenters that affected North America, including Xbox cloud gaming. The exact upstream provider causing the issue was not specified.

Customers in the South Central United States were informed of storage latency, timeouts, and HTTP 500 errors due to a power incident on December 26, 2024. Microsoft stated that a power outage had occurred in the South Central US AZ03 region, impacting several services. Mitigation measures had been implemented, and recovery efforts were underway. Further updates were promised within an hour.

By 21:22 UTC on December 26, 2024, Microsoft announced that the affected datacenter had been fully restored to power, resolving the issues that had impacted services in the South Central US.

In recent months, ChatGPT has experienced intermittent downtime, including a period of extended downtime following the release of Sora to subscribers earlier in the month. In June, ChatGPT was affected by a widespread outage that also impacted other AI tools.

As of December 26th, Microsoft and OpenAI continue to monitor the situation and provide updates as necessary. Efforts are ongoing to restore full functionality to ChatGPT and its associated services following the disruption caused by the upstream provider issue.
